Governor Ceremonially Signs Legislation Allowing Free
Admission to State Parks for Veterans
AUGUSTA – Governor John E. Baldacci today ceremonially
signed legislation that authorizes free day use access to State parks and historic sites for Maine veterans. Effective immediately
and valid until the fall, LD 1488 grants veterans free day access upon arrival at a State park or historic site.
Veterans may obtain free day access at the sites by producing
a proof of Maine residency and an easily recognizable veteran identification, including veteran discharge papers such as a
DD214 showing an honorable or under honorable character of service; identification cards such as a military ID or Veterans
Affairs ID; or veteran’s license plates.
"This Legislation recognizes the great sacrifices not only
of our current servicemen and women, but of our veterans as well," Governor Baldacci said. "Maine veterans can now obtain
free day passes to Maine’s parks and historical sites. It’s a concrete way that we can show our appreciation to
our veterans for their legacy of service to our state and nation."
The free day use access is issued only for veterans living
in Maine. There is no limit on visits or sites but valid identification must be shown upon arrival each time to receive the
free day access.
Upon closure of the parks and historic sites in the fall,
there will be further published guidance on obtaining a permanent pass through the Department of Veterans Services. The application
process for the pass will begin on Oct. 1 and the application instructions will be posted on the Maine Department of Conservation,
the Maine Bureau of Veterans Services and the State of Maine web sites.
Governor Baldacci was joined at the ceremonial signing by
bill sponsor Rep. Alex Cornell du Houx (D-Brunswick), Sen. Larry Bliss (D-Cumberland), other co-sponsors and supporters of
the legislation.
